Career confidence – are you the real deal?

Self-doubt is a sneaky little so-and-so, maybe you look good on paper but don’t feel it?

Rest assured, you’re in good company – even Helen Mirren has admitted to suffering from imposter syndrome.

 

Confidence boosting is a daily practice

So, are you the real deal?

If you’ve been doing what you do for 20+ years you are the real deal.

Do you believe me yet? 

But hang on there’s more to it.

 

It’s how you make people feel 

When you feel confident it reassures others.

Let’s use the final stages of a recruitment process as an example:


Have you ever been shortlisted for what seemed like the perfect role but you missed out because someone else was [INSERT REASON HERE]?


In principle, after a rigorous search and screening process, anyone on that final shortlist could potentially do the job. So, why not you?

What made one candidate more successful or luckier than you?

  • Was it their great CV?

  • Being in the right place at the right time?

  • Knowing and being known by the right people?

  • Were they just a slick operator with a polished interview performance?

You could waste a lot of time and energy trying to figure it out but you’ll never know for sure.

The final decision is not an exact formula. It boils down to fit, ability to do the job and how you make others feel. 

When there is doubt, there is a risk. 

  

You need a confidence team 

I’m all for self-development, but as well as cultivating it for yourself you need to inspire confidence in others. It’s time you found yourself a Confidence Team.

Who are your well-wishers, supporters and mentors? Get them on board!

  • Keep working on your professional profile & personal brand

  • Find your well-wishers and supporters – help others to feel confident too

  • Stand for something and stand against something – people like boundaries

  • Be known for your expertise – don’t leave them guessing

  • Commit to a daily self-confidence practice – when you feel good it shows

  • Don’t let a confidence issue hold you back
