How to future-proof your career

Why is it that marketers aren't good at marketing their experience, salespeople aren't great at selling themselves, and creative people aren’t that creative when it comes to their careers?

Simple answer – it’s personal.

It’s always easier to promote or sell a brand or product than it is to sell or market yourself. Selling yourself can feel awkward especially if you haven’t been shown how to do it. As a headhunter, my job was to sell people. I’m oversimplifying it here but I’d start off by selling an idea/opportunity to potential/target candidates and eventually I’d ‘sell’ the shortlisted candidates to the company that hired me.

The career services I offer now are based on the various stages and processes of executive search recruitment. I teach my private clients how to market and sell their expertise strategically at every twist and turn.

Future-proof your career

If taking care of your career is important to you – download my latest checklist: 15 things that every senior director should be doing for their career now. It's a roadmap to help you focus, based on the career programmes I teach.

Marketing

  • You need good content for your marketing materials (CV and LinkedIn profile) and often people don’t dig hard enough to find it

  • Unpack your past experiences. Unearth your personal highlights, results, achievements and strengths then you can cherry-pick for your CV

  • Work on your personal and professional brand – approach your job search like a marketing campaign

Sales

  • Selling is a subtle act. I'm not into anything that feels awkward or unnatural. The first step is to get crystal clear on your USP/niche and value proposition

  • Talking about your experience is different from writing about it in a CV. Selling is service –helping the other person to understand what you know and do and the problem you solve

  • It’s what you say, how you say it and how you make the other person feel

Creativity

  • To future-proof your career you need options and an action plan

  • What are your transferable skills? Where are you needed?

  • Invest in some whitespace thinking – try using the magical planning technique or perhaps you’d prefer fear setting?
