Is your reputation working hard enough for you?

Everyone has one but is your reputation working hard enough for you?

Your reputation can give you an edge and you can use it to position and grow your professional profile.

In this blog, I’m happy to reveal my non-fluffy reputation and why it’s good for my clients.

Everyone has a reputation – what’s yours?

Reputation is what you’re known for, it’s what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.

A bit like a USP – you can use your reputation to position and sell your expertise. It accompanies you along your career journey.

When I was at school I remember my Mum being gobsmacked that I was “a quiet and conscientious member of the class” yet a hellraiser at home.

Nowadays, I’m considered trustworthy, confidential and professional (as you'd hope) also:

“Straight forward, focused, a guiding light”

"Someone with a first-class reputation that doesn't take prisoners”

'Scarily brilliant" (more on that later).

What about you? What’s important in your line of work?

Having a good reputation gives you confidence and it inspires confidence in others.

Non-fluffy reputation

When people sign up to work with me, they’re usually looking for a new job and reassurance that they can find one. They’re drawn to me for my sector experience, my background in executive search and my approach.

I get to spend quite a bit of time with my clients. They tell me that they appreciate my direct style and guidance. Maybe because I’m also friendly and approachable?

The other day someone told me that I’d been highly recommended and was described as scarily brilliant (or was it brilliantly scary?).

How about that for an edge?

Executive search isn’t a fluffy industry. My clients benefit from working with someone entrusted by CEOs and founders to hire their key people.

Would you prefer I serve the truth, or tea and sympathy?

What’s your edge?

Having an edge isn't about being mean or ruthless – it’s where you do your best work. With discernment, you can use it to find your people, the right company culture and leadership.

So come on…what’s your edge?

Are you known?

When it comes to those juicy roles that aren’t in the public domain, your reputation will attract attention. Being known helps. What are you doing to build your professional profile?

Are you on the right radars?

Mark W Schaefer wrote about his experience of being a high-flying somebody to self-employed nobody in his book, Known. I know a lot of job seekers feel his pain. It’s easy to hide behind a job title until you haven’t got one. Mark goes on to explain how he cultivated a personal brand, grew his visibility and established himself as an authority as an entrepreneur.

Are you tending to your professional profile, building your brand, boosting your visibility and establishing your authority?

If you’re struggling did you know I offer 6 months+ support to my heavyweight exec clients?

That’s because it usually takes 6 months+ (often more) to land a job and the stakes are high.

Once I’ve got them and their search in good shape, I help them to build their profiles and get on the right radars. I’m there at the end of the phone or on Zoom keeping them on track and focused.
